I work as a patients' rights advocate at a large state-run psychiatric facility on the Eastern Seaboard of the USA. Some -most, actually- of the clients are here against their will; either sent from the courts or corrections or from some other smaller facility | Others have been committed by a probate court. A few are here "voluntariliy" though the definition of this is elusive for if a voluntary patient wants to leave he or she indicates their intent, and that can still be contested with a trip to court where, if the clinical folks convince the judge, they either get committed or the person "volunteers" to stay longer | You can start reading more about this stuff at
