PEFORMING ARTSPilobolus held a world premier performance of their new dange production,
MEGAWATT > FULL STRENGTH | It is, by far, the most athletic and oddly erotic production I've seen from this absolutely kinetic dance troupe | I should add that I'm a committed
pilobophile and attend their performances whenever I'm able, even if it means nose-bleed seats and dipping into the equity loan
balance of our house |
It is also demostratively the most ambitious work they've shown in public thus far | It's 65 minutes in length, with no intermission meaning not only no break for the audience, but no break for the performers either |
They remained up to the task | From the serpentine beginning to the absolutely electric conclusion six dancers tumbled about on stage in full action mode |
Given the performance was evocative of electrical energy, I found it intersting to overhear a viewer say that what he saw on-stage accurately mimiced the sensation of being electrocuted | He was a utilities man and he'd noted he'd gotten severely jolted on more than one occasion | He was duly impressed with the performance by dancers Mark Fucik, Renee Jaworski, Andrew Herro, Cleothea MCjunkins, Jenny Mendex and Manelich Minniefee |
I also have to give credit to lighting design | Neil Jampolis' direction in this regard made the performance even more ebullient for me | Given that I'm near-sighted, I sometimes take my eyeglasses off to study the blur of action more closely | In this show, the blurs were ablaze with kinetic light action as well ...made me want to suggest they troupe videotape their show with a gauzy lens for the effect | It was like multicolored
paramecia swimming across the stage is the best I can describe it |
Given that I'd just driven home from Philadelphia, had time barely to shower and travel again, the performance, while energetic, provided a welcome jump-start away from my grief process |
