Joel and Ray both commented on the watchful eye of government but went a step beyond to implicate corporations and mega-religious bodies. Nothig new to me, but their quips make me think about another aspect of this surveillance thing. An aspect that, perhaps, this nation's founding fathers might have thought about were the technologies that exist now available then, at least on their horizon.
What I'm thinking of is those whose allegiances are not truly with or towards this nation.
Although there are those who are quick to wrap this nation's flag around themselves and point to others as being ~ somehow ~ less patriotic than they are, by their actions they have shown that they are not beholden to this nation's well-being, sanctity, safety or even its survival.
Characters, for example, who think that government by the people should "drowned in the bathtub," or are seduced by the lure of easy riches for themselves, are essentially advocating the destruction of the nation's leadership. Such beliefs endanger the life of the people.
One might argue that people of this ilk [and Grover Norquist is but one of many] are committing treason. A premise I would agree with unless I thought that they were not really representative of the citizery of this nation and while citizens on paper, actually represented some other government. Such "other governments" could include multi-national corporations or some large religious sect [like Opus Dei, a Catholic crypto-facist cult with adherents like Rick Santorum and Antonin Scalia]
Those who pledge fealty to some other government, be it Opus Dei, the 700 Club, Wal-Mart or Mobil-Exxon are not representing the people. They are agents of foreign powers. As such, they should be required to register as aliens and flack for outside organizations.
I'm not talking about people who work for such
organizations or would even necessarily be members. I'm talking of those who have shown that their alleigance does not lie with the preservation of the free-wheeling nation our founding fathers envisioned.
Mind you, I realize that getting something like this enacted would be difficult [HAH!]. I'm merely presenting the thought.
Yes, it's rough and not all spelled out. Others who are more articulate than I with political language are welcome to build upon the concept.
My point is, and to bring the thread back to where I started, that not only ought we do something more about the issue of those in power [as contrasted with people exercising leadership in government ~ can probably counnt that group fairly quick] ... those people in power watching us, good citizens. But that we need to ourselves be morre aggressive about surveilling the whereabouts of traitors who wrap themselves in the flag, collude and overtly conspire to bring this nation down while claiming to be planning for the future for the rest of us.
Let me tell you something. This group are planning for the future. But it isn't for us to play an equal part. In fact, it isn't for us at all. It's just for themselves. As the threads of corruption between Washington, corporate elites and this generation's Elmer Gantrys unravel, what I'm getting at will be all the more self evident. How could we catch the miscreants quicker? I dunno. Use a lie detector?
As the clothier said, "I gar-un-tee it!"

oh, yes, surely, you've heard about the government "requesting" certain records about internet activity. oh, br'dah! ... cynical and skeptical lil'ole me, I'm smelling a rat in all that. Quite candidly, I have cause to suspect that more than compiling statistics on access to pornographic websites is involved.
oh, yeah, right after Hitler came to power, the German people were assured that, if they were innocent of untoward activity, they would have nothing to worry about ... yeah, right.
